Mispelled Love

The first time I fell in love

I learned how to give.

I thought “I love you” was spelled

And so I gave and gave

Expecting little in return.

My hand to hold

My shoulder to cry on.

Most only lend an ear

But I?

I gave it away

So I’d listen only to you.

Every nook and cranny and crevice

I gave myself

In its entirety.

But more than anything

I gave my time

I gave all the things I could not take back

Not realizing I could love

And still keep some things for myself.
