Under Long Sleeves

I once wore my heart on my sleeve

Long before I knew what that meant.

Then life bared its fangs

And I learned to store my heart away

In a steel safe

Behind doors and bars and barbed wire

Out of sight.

I hide my heart

So no one can use it against me.
