Spoiler Warning! If you haven’t seen the movie yet, go watch it first! Review part 1 here!
Steven Universe is a sixteen year-old boy who’s gone through his share of hardship. And after all that he finally finds peace, his very own happily-ever-after.
And disaster is thrown at his feet, yet again.
But in the face of everything that happens throughout the movie, Steven is still trying to do good. So my question is why are some people being so hard in him?
After Spinel gets her memories back and stops her injector, Steven immediately shifts gears to helping Garnet. I’ve been seeing people get upset with Steven for that so let me put it this way:
If someone asked you to choose between someone you’ve known your entire life, someone you love dearly, or someone you’ve just met and who’s first impression wasn’t that great; isn’t the choice obvious?
People are selfish, it’s human and not necessarily a bad thing. It’s not wrong to care about one person more than another. It’s perfectly normal. To ask someone to care about all people that come into their life equally is flat-out insane.
Yes, Steven cares a lot about people but he’s still a
half human. He’s allowed some selfishness.
Maybe I have a bias because I’ve put the people I care about above others without hesitation and I have no regrets in doing so. I am fiercely protective of these people and nothing could stop me from doing what I need to do for them.
I’m not saying it’s okay what Steven did. But it’s pretty obvious his main reason for bringing Spinel back was to shut down the injector, nothing more or less. That’s not to say he doesn’t care about Spinel, but she’s far from a priority.
Even before Spinel gets her memories back, Steven really just treats her like a tag along. At no point during the movie is Spinel a true part of the group. She’s an outsider looking in, only getting a glimpse of what she could’ve had if things had turned out differently.
But back to Steven; he’s sixteen. He’s a literal child. Yes, he’s mature. And yes, he’s done a lot. But he’s still just a kid stuck in a shitty situation.
So why do people have such ridiculous expectations of him?
